4It works like nothing else.  Sep 12, 2010 By Eric H
It works like nothing else. My remote is branded Hampton Bay model# 838-956, controlling a Hunter ceiling fan in the bedroom. I use this gadget every night in the summer for the past 4 years, so I can raise the air conditioning setpoint and save some energy. Ceiling fans use less energy than central AC.

This wireless ceiling fan thermostat and light control works, but has some quirks:
1. the wireless range may be 50-feet in open air, but it had occasional problems with penetrating a shallow partition wall (4 inches of drywall and studs in the same room) at 8-foot-range. Every 3-4 months in the middle of the night, the light receiver would get a spurious signal and go to 100% on, waking us up - this was fixed by relocating the remote to direct line-of-sight.

2. The thermostat has the annoying feature of unadjustable 4-degrees-F differential between fan-speeds when in AUTO-FAN mode. That makes it simple but I would prefer to adjust the differential as well as setpoint. So when I make setpoint 72F, then FAN-LO starts at 72, FAN-MED at 76, FAN-HI at 80. When temperature falls then FAN-HI stops at 79, FAN-MED at 75, FAN-LO at 71 (fan turns OFF).

Good stuff:
3. The light is dimmable for dimmable lights in 1% increments - press and hold to dim - easy. Tap to turn off/on at the preset dim level. AVOID putting a non-dimmable CFL in there.

3A. The batteries have lasted 2-3 years so far.

4. manual FAN speed control is available. Good for drying off after a shower.

Don't-care-stuff:
5. FAN-timer and LIGHT-timer are available - I never use them.
6. No fan-reverse switch on the remote. Manual reverse is on the fan.

Conclusion:
This thermostat/remote control saves me money by allowing me to maintain the bedroom comfort level while raising the central AC setpoint. It's the only retail gadget that I have found that will easily enable room temperature control of a ceiling fan-light. I like it a lot.

Note: I am an engineer in commercial building automation. This is an easy DIY installation that requires taking the light assembly and wiring apart so it helps to have three hands, and it only took 15 minutes.

FYI turn OFF the ceiling fan and light when you leave the room because moving air only cools people - it does not cool the room.

Good luck.

Postscript 2011-08-08: my setup, like other reviewers, has developed a frequent 100%-lights-ON at random times, usually while sleeping, after 4-6 hours OFF, every 2-3 nights. I'll try changing the DIP-switch-code. Batteries made no difference. Until it's fixed, I've switched the lights off at the fan. The automatic fan control seems to work normally.

PPS 2011-10-25: I changed the DIP-switch-code on transmitter and receiver, and the light does not turn on randomly any more. Ahhh nice.

5Excellent replacement for a Hampton Bay Remote  Aug 06, 2011 By Cynthia Y. Carpenter
I ordered this one to replace my Hampton Bay remote. It works great and was so simple to install. Timesaver note: The thermostat is encased within the top portion of the ceiling fan; where the fan attaches to the ceiling and not near the hanging portion where the motor is.

2Ghosts must be running the lights in this remote.  May 25, 2011 By Thomas F. Lawson
I purchased three of these remotes when we built our house back in 2004, the 'Hampton Bay' version which, it appears, is exactly the same as the Westinghouse models BUT, may not be.
Well, they look the same anyway.
All three of these work perfectly EXCEPT for one area where they drive my wife and I absolutely insane.
What could that be? There must be 'ghosts' running the remote light controls.
Hows that? Because the lights in the ceiling fan go on and off at random time and drive us crazy.
Just consider this. We have two of our three fans hung in our library, which has 20' ceilings and is 24'x30'.
We also have a large electric movie screen that descends from behind a valance at the ceiling.
Imagine watching a movie and the fans are on and....right in the middle, its daylight, even at 10pm, with 8 lights on the lighting kits
flashing on and off every 2 minutes or so.
We may be the only people in the world with this problem...don't know, but its driving us bats.
I called Home Depot's/Hampton Bay's hot line, and they were great....but no fix.
I tried taking the batteries out of the remote. I've tried turning the fan in the Family Room totally off.
I've tried every button option on the fan to see what's doing it.
The only time it does it is when the fan is on and running.
Ghosts must like the cool breeze I guess.

5Works perfectly and installed easily  May 11, 2011 By B. Hooven "whooven"
I wanted to wait a few weeks before reviewing this remove control. I found it very easy to install because all of the wires matched the colors of the wires on the ceiling fan I was installing. Maybe that's the key. I installed it at the same time I installed a new ceiling fan. A retrofit is probably more cumbersome. The control box you need to mount inside of the fan fit snugly because it's kind of large. I ended up having to use heavy duty two sided tape. I wanted a remote control for my ceiling fan so I didn't have to get up in the middle of the night to turn it on or off. Once I learned what button to push on the remote, I found I could easily do it with my eyes closed. Being able to set a temperature for the fan to come on or a timer so the fan turns off after a period of time was a bonus. The light button can turn the light kit on or off and even dim. Since it keeps the last dim setting, you can set it at say 50% power so when you turn it on in the morning it doesn't blind you. It's a nice touch that the light gradually turns on and off so it's a gently transition.

I made sure and set the frequency to something other than the default and I haven't had to change it. I haven't experienced any interference. The buttons all work the first time I push them. About the only downside I can see is that you need to leave the fan on at the wall switch, which means as you leave the room for the day you need to find the remote and turn it off there. Actually you could turn it off at the switch but then the next night you'd probably forget it was off there and have to get out of bed again. Keep that in mind.

I did a bit of research before settling on this remote. I like extra features so it fit my needs. I'm totally happy with this purchase and would recommend it for anyone looking for a fan remote control.

4BUILT WELL & PRICED RIGHT !!!  Apr 04, 2011 By BRIGHT727
BUILT WELL & PRICED RIGHT !!!
VERY HAPPY with PRODUCT !!!
Only 2 draw backs... (1) Sometimes you have to hit a button more than once to respond (but always works) and (2) It's a little bit bulky in size.
Overall has great features for it's price and I have had no problems with it (been using for over a year now).
