A COOLER ATTIC.... Jul 01, 2011
By river rat 222 A well built (made in the USA) unit that comes with a portable 10 Watt solar panel. The solar panel is sturdy with an aluminum frame that can be easily mounted and can be placed away from the vent to receive maximum solar energy since it comes with a 20 ft long cord or so, which is a nice feature. The panel runs at 20 volts DC when under sunlight according to my volt meter. With one of these solar fan vent units you do not need to do additional wiring to bring power to the attic, which can save alot of work if you do not already have wiring there (which I did not). I like this because when the attic is hot with the sun beating down on the roof, the unit runs from the solar power and keeps the attic cooler when you need it most and it does not add to my power bill. I even expect to save a little on my power bill with the cooler attic this provides. Before installing the unit on the roof I added 6 intake vents under the eaves so I would be sure to have lots of supply air available to get a better flow from the solar fan unit. The attic can become very hot since we receive abundant sunlight here in Arizona, with something like 320+ sunny days annually. The unit is rated to move as much as 800 CFM and comes with a 5 year warranty. It does not move as much air as a traditional fan of the same size, but does a good job still and the hot air is pouring out of the attic like crazy now. I am super glad about the purchase (which I made locally) and can recommend it. I should have installed one of these solar powered vents sooner! No idea yet about the lifespan of the unit.
