| The 3M indoor window insulator kit provides an airtight seal to keep the heat in and the cold out (click to enlarge). | Keep the Heat In and the Cold Out Made by 3M, this indoor window insulator kit contains window insulation film along with Scotch Window Film Tape to keep cold drafts out and warm air in. As a result, you can reduce your heating costs during the winter. The film shrinks tight around your window for a transparent, wrinkle-free fit and is made to reduce condensation and prevent frost build-up. Double-Sided Mounting Tape for a Secure Seal Included with this kit is a 1/2-inch-by-27-7/10-yard roll of 3M window film mounting tape to keep your insulation in place all season long. This double-sided tape seals off cracks and crevices, creates an airtight seal, and establishes a strong bond between the surface, the tape, and the insulation film, as recommended in ENERGY STAR's "Seal and Insulate" guidelines. Featuring a convenient, ready-to-peel liner, the tape adheres easily to a variety of surfaces and stays intact upon removal. Simple, Fast Installation Installing the window insulation is easy. You simply unfold the film and cut it to the width of the window, allowing an extra inch on all sides. Next, you firmly apply the mounting tape around the window frame and remove the paper liner. Then you apply the film to the tape, starting at the top of the window, and reposition and stretch the film to remove wrinkles. Finally, you use a blow dryer to remove any remaining wrinkles, then trim any excess film. Made in the United States, and designed for indoor use only, this insulator kit can be used with aluminum, vinyl-clad, or painted or varnished wood molding, but it should not be applied to veneer paneling or Lauan mahogany molding. The film and tape should be removed from the window at the end of the season. The film measures 15 square yards, or 7 feet by 19.7 feet by 0.75 thousandths of an inch (H x W x D), and weighs 0.5 pounds. What's in the Box Window insulation film and one roll of mounting tape. | | | | This insulator kit is easy to install, and a blow dryer enables you to remove wrinkles for a transparent view (click each to enlarge). |

I had no idea how much cold air comes in through windows! Jan 16, 2007
By Michael
"Mad Mike"
Desperate to try and save a few bucks on my electric bill I thought I should at least give this product a try. I had no problem hanging the plastic. The double sided tape and plastic were very forgiving. My first window looks as good as the last one. You can barely tell it is there. I tried it out in one room at first to see how well it does. It works! I did the rest of my house after that. Well, I did leave a couple of windows uncovered just in case the weather warmed up. Once this stuff is up it is an all or nothing deal, that window is out of commision until you pull the plastic down. I did have a smooth surface available around each window which does help the tape adhere, might be a consideration if you have heavily textured walls. I don't know how much paint will be ripped off of the walls come spring. It is worth the risk.

3M Insulating Window film Dec 06, 2008
By Jerry Block I like the Branded 3M merchandise, because it has enough thickness to apply easily. When you shrink it it goes smooth and pretty clear. The 3M tape separates fairly easily to apply it and hold the plastic well. I have used private labeled store brands before and they they don't compare to 3M.

easy application Nov 27, 2009
By Jason A. Gagnon I knew I had to cover some of my widows, but I was dreading actually doing it. It is not the sort of job I look forward to. Thankfully this goes up easily with minimum frustration.
The double sided tape is very forgiving, and I was able to lift it up and reposition it without it losing its grip. The plastic is light enough and stuck perfectly to the tape so I was able to do this as a one man job, rather than having to drag my wife into helping me.
I am worried that the cats will look on this as a challenge, but so far, so good, and they've only decided to poke one little hole and then lost interest. So far.

Easy to hang, plenty to go around Dec 28, 2010

"Always looking for a great story"
Great product. Room feels warmer and my breezes are blocked. Installation was breeze...not sure how people could ever find it difficult. Clean the sill/casing with rubbing alcohol to remove oils/dirt. Cut the plastic film to the width you need. Apply tape. Stick on film. Blow dry out the wrinkles. Note: The purpose of the blow drying is to get the wrinkles out and make the film even more transparent. If you apply the film on very tight to begin with (i.e. no wrinkles from the get go) the blow drying process will not be as dramatic, thus you may feel like nothing is happening.
I purchased the Indoor Oversized kit because my windows are large. They are roughly 6'x7', they are two standard width windows put together and extra long, so I knew the normal sized version of this kit wouldn't work. The oversized kit has enough material to cover 3 of my large windows.
PLEASE NOTE: The material is very thin. I mistakenly thought I was given a bad box with the wrong sized plastic, because after I cut the width I needed it only unfolded to half the length. I went ahead and hung it, deciding just to overlap two pieces and create a seam. While blow drying the plastic I noticed the film wrinkling oddly. That is when I noticed it was actually folded over on to itself. So learn from my mistake and treat the plastic film like a vegetable bag at the grocery store...rub it till it opens.

Brought my heating bill down significantly Jan 02, 2011
By Michelle Hurley I live in a 35-story apartment building with drafty windows and electric heat. Last winter my heating bills were about $300-400 per month. This year I put up the insulation film on all my windows. They ballooned out significantly, and sometimes even came undone at the edges because the wind was so forceful so I had to re-do the taping a few times on all my windows. But my heating bills this winter have all been under $200 per month so it was well worth the time and energy to put them up. The insulator kits paid for themselves.
