Keep the Heat In and the Cold Out
Made by 3M, this indoor window insulator kit contains window insulation film along with Scotch Window Film Tape to keep cold drafts out and warm air in. As a result, you can reduce your heating costs during the winter. The film shrinks tight around your window for a transparent, wrinkle-free fit and is made to reduce condensation and prevent frost build-up.

Double-Sided Mounting Tape for a Secure Seal
Included with this kit is a 1/2-inch-by-12-yard roll of 3M window film mounting tape to keep your insulation in place all season long. This double-sided tape seals off cracks and crevices, creates an airtight seal, and establishes a strong bond between the surface, the tape, and the insulation film, as recommended in ENERGY STAR's "Seal and Insulate" guidelines. Featuring a convenient, ready-to-peel liner, the tape adheres easily to a variety of surfaces and stays intact upon removal.

Simple, Fast Installation
Installing the window insulation is easy. You simply unfold the film and cut it to the width of the window, allowing an extra inch on all sides. Next, you firmly apply the mounting tape around the window frame and remove the paper liner. Then you apply the film to the tape, starting at the top of the window, and reposition and stretch the film to remove wrinkles. Finally, you use a blow dryer to remove any remaining wrinkles, then trim any excess film.

Made in the United States, and designed for indoor use only, this insulator kit can be used with aluminum, vinyl-clad, or painted or varnished wood molding, but it should not be applied to veneer paneling or Lauan mahogany molding. The film and tape should be removed from the window at the end of the season. The film measures 4 square yards, or 5.16 feet by 7 feet by 0.75 thousandths of an inch (H x W x D), and weighs 0.13 pounds.

4Pretty Good  Dec 05, 2008 By Anon
Bought this for my apartment and it appears to work well. There are small, almost unnoticable lines in the film but you can barely see them. Also, the film becomes very noticeable over the window when I turn a my desk lamp on (about 1.5 feet away). It is still slightly drafty (I think it's just a cheap window) but the film cuts the draft down noticeably. Saw a commercial for Duck brand film that is sold in WalMart stores, probably would have bought that in-store to save on the 80% s&h charge.

A note: 3M is back at they're old tricks, practically giving away their double stick tape (retails for about $6) so you buy their film for $10. It may be more economical for you to buy the 3M tape, which I hear is the best, and use it on Duck brand film. For the same price as the 2-window 3M kit you can get a 5-window Duck kit (3M's version is $18). However, I personally don't know if Duck is any good.

4Worked out well for my son's windows  Jan 28, 2010 By Jay "jason_j_a"
It's been crazy cold this winter in Florida and one of my son's windows doesn't seal quite right due to the house shifting a bit. So I used this kit to seal up this window and it worked very well. I found that the 3m tape doesn't stick to the cold aluminum window frames that well so use the hairdryer to warm up the frames and then stick the tape to the frame. After that it was a breeze and it really does end up crystal clear once you heat it up with a hair dryer. This window no longer has a draft and my son's room stays much warmer during these cold nights.

5Saved 50% on heating & A/C in an apartment  Dec 13, 2010 By Binary Techie
I once lived in a 2nd floor apartment (probably about 600 sq ft) in a 3-story Philadelphia row home. The bedroom was in the front with 2 large windows above a red tin roof covering the front porch. In back was the living room with only one rear-facing window and a kitchenette along the opposite wall. Between these rooms was the bathroom and a hallway connecting all three. Because the prevailing winds were always buffeting the front windows, I used the 3M Window Insulator Kit there.

With the windows insulated, I found that a single 1500W space heater in the front room, plus a small fan in the hallway, blowing toward the living room, kept the entire apartment as warm as I could want it to be. I was able to disconnect the baseboard heaters throughout the apartment (and use those circuits for other electrical appliances, such as my computer, A/V system, microwave oven and A/C). It was an old house with barely enough outlets for lighting. In the summer, even with the heat coming off that tin roof, a modest (12.5K BTU) room air conditioner in one front window kept the whole place comfortable.

I'm sure it helped that I was surrounded by neighbors on both sides and apartments above and below, which were usually occupied and kept heated in the winter or cooled in the summer. Anyway, my electric bill was cut in half year-round. That 3M Window Insulation paid for itself hundreds of times over in less than 3 years.

5Bravo!  Jan 12, 2011 By DIYMom
The difference really is in the tape. It has the right amount of sticking power. You won't have to continuous apply pressure for it to stick, which is what I have experienced with many other brands. Also, the plastic is stronger than many others. I love this product.

4This stuff works... but the description is wrong  Nov 24, 2010 By J. T. Klein
I ordered the 2 window size - 2PK (Doesn't this mean 2 pack?) and only 1 box came in the mail. This is really dissapointing both from a price perspective (this stuff isn't really cheap) and from a convience one. I now need to order another.

Anyhow, this stuff is easy to use, does its job and yes over priced - but why would you go out of way to find plastic sheets this large. We used this in Vermont to keep our heating costs down and rooms warm, it DOES work.
